Sinister 2: How does it Compare at the Horror Boxoffice?

Sinister 2 is one of the last of this years big horror films to enter the cinemas and unfortunately it seems like people are becoming tired of the horror genre. With an opening weekend at #3 with $10,542,116 if fails to reach even half of what Insidious: Part Three earned and it also earned less than The Gift by $2,000,000 which in opening weekend terms, is more substantial than you would think. Insidious 3 made on average $7,559 per theater compared to Sinister 2’s less than stellar $3,800. Sinister 2 had a second week drop of 55.9% which was more than The Gift and The Lazarus Effect but surprisingly less than Insidious 3.

Thankfully, the horror is made on a micro-budget of $10 million so the film is defiantly not at a loss, but is the genre?

Only Insidious 3 managed to surpass the $100million boxoffice mark, and if you minus the production budget it failed to reach an $100million profit. We still have several more horrors to be released this year, check out our top list here. Will these other films follow suite and prove the horror genre is overplayed and tired or did Sinister 2 just not gain enough interest and appeal especially as it has to battle with the big budget/superhero flicks.
